Winterization Guide – Horizontal Cold Tub
Quick Overview:
If your winter temperatures stay above 20°F — Keep your tub plugged in, running, and covered — and you should be fully protected. (The chiller running + water constantly circulating prevents freezing).
If temperatures drop below 20°F, or you begin to see a thin layer of ice forming on the water — review the options below to choose the best winterization approach for your setup:
- Option A: Upgrade to Our New Chiller With Freeze Protection
- Option B: Continue Using Outdoors With Bypass
- Option C: Move Indoors
- Option D: Not Using Tub This Winter? Drain it & move chiller indoors
COLD TEMPERATURES
Cold Creek Tubs are built for year-round use, indoors or outdoors. With the right precautions, your tub and chiller will operate safely throughout winter. Use the guidelines below to protect your system from freeze damage.
⚠️ Important Notes:
- Freeze damage is not covered under warranty. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the tub and chiller are protected in cold weather.
- If the tub is turned off while still filled with water, the pump can freeze and become damaged. This is also not covered under warranty.
- If you're unsure whether your setup is adequately protected, the safest option is to drain your tub and store your chiller indoors.
1. General Winter Guidelines (Temperatures Above 20°F)
- Always Keep It Plugged In: Continuous circulation is the best defense against freezing. Never unplug your tub in freezing temperatures.
- Use the Lid: Keep your lid on whenever the tub isn’t in use to retain heat and prevent ice formation.
- Clear Snow & Ice from Vents: Ensure the chiller has unobstructed airflow.
- Monitor Conditions: If temps drop below 20°F for 3+ days straight, follow the additional steps below.
2. Extreme Cold Guidelines (Prolonged Temperatures Below 20°F)
When temperatures stay at or below 20°F for several days in a row, take one of the protective steps below.
Option A: Upgrade to our Winter Ready Chiller
- If you’d like to keep using your tub outdoors without worrying about freezing temps, this is the easiest solution.
- The Winter Ready Chiller is an upgraded unit that includes a built-in heater, so you won’t have to worry about freezing at all. The heater automatically activates when temps drop, preventing ice from forming inside the chiller and plumbing. You can keep your current chiller for warmer months or use it as a backup.
- Purchase the "Winter Ready Chiller", or give us a call at 909-232-8920.
Option B: Keep Using Your Tub Outdoors With a Bypass Installed
- If you plan to continue outdoor plunging during extreme cold, we recommend removing the chiller and installing a bypass so the pump can circulate water safely.
- How this works: Swapping the chiller for a bypass coupling keeps water moving in the tub while allowing the chiller to stay safely indoors and protected from freezing.
-
Instructions for Installing a Bypass:
- Bring the chiller indoors — Store it in a dry, climate-controlled space.
- Install the Bypass Coupling — Use the bypass coupling (linked here) to connect the pump directly to the filter. This keeps water circulating and prevents freezing. Watch step-by-step video instructions: 📸
Option C: Move the Tub Indoors for Winter Use
- If you prefer indoor plunging during winter, simply relocate the tub. It weighs ~170 lbs when empty and can be moved by 2–3 people.
- Steps: Fully drain the water, then remove the chiller before moving (lightens the weight of the tub).
Option D: Pause Winter Use
- If you won’t be using your tub during winter, drain it completely and store the chiller indoors.
- Steps: Drain all the water from the tub and plumbing, then disconnect the chiller and store inside.
- When you’re ready to use your tub again, simply reinstall your chiller and set up your cold tub as usual. Need a refresher? 👉 Watch our Setup Guide instructions and videos
In Summary
For normal winter use, keep your Cold Creek Tub plugged in, running, and covered.
If temperatures drop below 20°F for several days, or if you won’t be using the tub, take one of the steps above to protect your investment.
