Cold Weather Performance

Cold Weather Performance

Our tubs are designed to be used inside or outside in all weather conditions. Our tubs use a 1,200 GPH pump that always runs to keep the water clean and cool.

Water Movement

In ponds or in cold tubs without a pump, the top layer of the water will freeze first and early because this water stays in contact with the air that is below 32 degrees. In our cold tub (similar to a river), the water is always moving and mixes well, this makes it harder for sections of the water in the tub to get colder and freeze.

Tub Insulation

Cold Creek Tubs molds and foam fills the tub & lid in-house. We can afford to make a product that is overbuilt, because we are the manufacturer and there isn’t a middleman.

Plumbing Insulation

Overlapped NBR/PVC-based closed cell insulation is wrapped around all of the plumbing in the mechanical compartment.

Area of Concern with Freezing

The blue filter housing is the only component in the mechanical compartment that is not insulated and it has the lowest flow.

Heating Add On

When your climate has an average temperature of 15F for longer than 1 week, we recommend wrapping the 20’ long filter housing with Frost King HC3A Automatic Electric Heat Kit Heating Cables, 3 Feet, Black. The heating cable will automatically turn on when the temperature of the water filter housing surface reaches 38F and automatically turn off at 45F.

If Heating Element Doesn't Work

If the plumbing system starts to freeze, the jet pump into the tub will slow down substantially. If the jet pump slows down substantially, either change the water filter or remove the filter cartridge entirely.

Extra Step of Precaution (Chiller Removal)

If the filter continues to clog and the jet pump continues to slow during extreme cold. Cold Creek can send you a chiller “delete” coupling so you can remove the chiller from the tub and store it inside your home. You can continue your cold therapy without the chiller since the outside air is so cold. We recommend an in water thermometer during this operation so you are aware of the water temperature.

Summary

The Cold Creek Tub is heavily insulated and includes a heavily insulated lid. If you are using your tub, your body will add heat to the tub and only in the crazy extremes will you have issues with your tub performance. We are here to help with any questions you may have!

I will be using my tub in Ketchum, Idaho this winter without changing a thing, but I’ll be mindful when the temperatures stay below 20F for multiple days.

Thank you,
